Enhanced diffusion due to motile bacteria

چکیده
The effect of bacterial motion on the diffusion of a molecule of high molecular weight is studied by observing the mixing of two streams of fluid in a microfluidic flow cell. We show that the presence of motile E. coli bacteria in one of the streams results in a marked increase in the effective diffusion coefficient of Dextran, which rises linearly with the concentration of bacteria from a baseline value of 0.2310−7 to 0.8310−7 scm2/sd at a concentration of 2.13109/ml (approximately 0.5% by volume). Furthermore, we observe that the diffusion process is also observed to undergo a change from standard Fickian diffusion to a superdiffusive behavior in which the diffusion exponent rises from 0.5 to 0.55 as the concentration of bacteria rises from 0 to 2.13109/ml. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Enhanced diffusion of nonswimmers in a three-dimensional bath of motile bacteria.
We show, using differential dynamic microscopy, that the diffusivity of nonmotile cells in a three-dimensional (3D) population of motile E. coli is enhanced by an amount proportional to the active cell flux. While nonmotile mutants without flagella and mutants with paralyzed flagella have quite different thermal diffusivities and therefore hydrodynamic radii, their diffusivities are enhanced to...
متن کاملBacterial motility in the sea and its ecological implications
Motility could be an important adaptation of heterotrophic bacteria and archaea, and it may have ecological and biogeochemical implications. However, the limited observations so far show that only a small fraction (≤10%) of bacteria is motile. We report a systematic 10 mo long field study off the coast of La Jolla, California, as well as a mesocosm study to examine bacterial motility and its re...
متن کاملAntagonistic Activity of Bacillus Cereus against Human and Fish Pathogenic Bacteria
The most commonly used probiotic is usually characterized as gram positive, non motile, non sporulating bacteria that produce lactic acid as their main by product due to fermentation. The Morphological, Biochemical, Acid and Bile salt tolerance, Haemolytic test are used for identification and conformation of probiotic bacteria. Isolated Bacillus cereus was analyzed using the agar diffusion meth...

Samples from the kidney of 100 diseased fish with signs of haemorrhagic septicemia and 50 samples from outlet water of fish farms were taken aseptically and cultured. In the laboratory, 75 colonies of gram-negative bacteria were biochemically diagnosed as motile aeromonads in our Bacteriology Laboratory Unit using API 20E rapid identification system. The genotype identification using specific p...
متن کاملHigh motility reduces grazing mortality of planktonic bacteria.
We tested the impact of bacterial swimming speed on the survival of planktonic bacteria in the presence of protozoan grazers. Grazing experiments with three common bacterivorous nanoflagellates revealed low clearance rates for highly motile bacteria. High-resolution video microscopy demonstrated that the number of predator-prey contacts increased with bacterial swimming speed, but ingestion rat...
